President Pervez Musharraf says he will give Gillani his full support. A cabinet announcement is expected within the next few days.
Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has sent a congratulatory message to Gillani on being elected Pakistan's prime minister.
The Pakistan People's Party emerged as the largest party in the Pakistan National Assembly in the general election held on February the 18th.
The oath-taking was administered by President Pervez Musharraf and attended by the National Assembly Speaker, some political parties leaders and senior military officers.
Musharraf has stressed his full support to the new Prime Minister. He urged all political forces to work together to fight terrorism.
Pervez Musharraf, Pakistani President, said, "A difficult era in terms of terrorism, extremism and the economy is ahead, so it will be good if everyone moves together in a balanced manner. But in this the bigger role will be the Prime Minister's, and my support will always be with him."
Gillani has called for political parties to cooperate to tackle problems, including the economy.
Yousuf Raza Gillani, Pakistani Prime Minister, said, "All forces have to get together and bring the country out of these crises and for that we need everybody's support."
Following the ceremony, Gillani says he will announce a 100-day program.
The new National Assembly overwhelmingly backed Gillani as prime minister in Monday's vote.
