Official: Chinese people enjoy full freedom of religious beliefs

The Director of China's State Administration for Religious Affairs, Ye Xiaowen, has delivered a speech at Georgetown University in Washington DC attended by American scholars and religious leaders.

Ye said that two basic principles of China's religious policy are respecting freedom of religion and guaranteeing the independent running of religious groups. He said Chinese people now enjoy full freedom of religious beliefs.
Ye also noted Chinese President Hu Jintao's recent statements about the significance of religion which Ye says is a very important message to the world.
He later signed a cooperation agreement with Georgetown University which he hopes will help the two countries find effective ways of building a peaceful world.
