Silk Street is already a big name, one that even reaches overseas. Its popularity was based on the ready availability of top designer fakes.

Now the market is changing its tactics. It's launched its own Silk Street line, which features shirts, ties, scarves, teacups and other goods.

The market's general manager says the move to sell a Silk Street brand is a way to start to enforce intellectual property rights and show that better quality and genuine products go hand in hand.

George Wang, General manager Beijing Silk Street Company, said, "Some famous brands are made in China anyway, so we just have to 'substitute' the North Face brand with Silk Street. And with help from consumers, I'm sure this will work."

The market has also come up with other measures to clean up business, such as giving a 20 percent discount on rent to stalls that sell genuine goods. But it takes time to build its own brand.

Lin Zhonglong, Silk Street shopkeeper, said, "So far no one has bought it yet because I think most people don't know about the Silk Street brand."

But the company remains optimistic. The Beijing Olympics proclaims "One World, One Dream," and Silk Street hopes to capture some of that spirit.
