(Edwin can't explain this pic, he is as puzzled as I am!!!)

THE 5 MINUTE INTERVIEW: Edwin Maher, CCTV-9 News Anchor

Ask any journalist how they get their interviews and you will hear a range of wily tricks of the trade. Here, you see my personal favourite technique, just stick it in their face and catch them off guard for a more candid response! Finally, twist the words a bit, make a catchy headline and add a funny face like this---->

CCTV-9's EDWIN: I WANT A BIG HUG FROM LI MAOQI!

EL: Yeah.. look at this.. (shows his Ipod + Belkin Tunetalk Stereo) ... its recording...

EM: Noooo! I'm not in the mood hahaha!

EL: Really? Its just five minutes...whats your favourite Olympic sport?

EM: I really like watching the gymnastics, its great to see, but I play tennis, one of my ambitions is to go to one of the athletic events, I'd love to see Liu Xiang! I've got some tickets for the athletics but I'm not sure if he'll be featured.

EL: What about the medal prospects for New Zealand?

EM: Well, for New Zealand and Australia...Australia always does well in swimming and athletics and beach volleyball, things like that- they'll put on a really good show.

EL: But you're a New Zealander right?

EM: (Laughs) I'm torn between the two because I was born in New Zealand but I left in my late teen years for Australia then I returned to New Zealand to work for the NZ Broadcasting Corporation and then went back to Australia and stayed there for quite a while.

EL: But what happens when the two sides play rugby? Which side do you support? Must be New Zealand right?

EM: Well, that also depends how I feel...with cricket it is the same. If I think they are playing well, I'll root for that side. I don't mind, I'm happy to see either side win when they play other teams.

EL: (Sneak question) What's your favourite CCTV-9 program?

EM: Ehhh???? (Caught off guard) You're really catching me on the hop here! I quite enjoy watching "close up" (Up Close) because I think they have some very interesting guests with interesting stories to tell. I don't get to see it as often as I would like to.

EL: Have you ever been in the audience?

EM: No, but I was briefly on the program... it was their two or three year anniversary and I talked briefly for a few minutes.

EL: I won't ask you who your favourite presenter is!

EM: Hahaha... Edward has got my arm twisted

EL: yeah right round your back!

EM: BizChina!

EL: So who is the first face you saw on CCTV-9?

EM: That would have to have been Li Maoqi. Yes I always remember seeing him and then when I came to work here, I met him of course and I could understand why people call him "The Bear" because he is a huge man, very warm and you could imagine getting a big hug from him and feeling good about it...

EL: (looking at watch before the BizChina show) My last question is, when is your blog coming out?

EM: I will NEVER DO A BLOG. I don't have the energy but I'm very honoured to be on other peoples' blogs so thank you for the invitation!

EL: Any message for the blogizens out there?

EM: The who???

EL: The people who read our blogs.

EM: Oh well! Just keep searching, you'll never know what you might find!

EL: Cool, thanks man.
