Premier Wen: China highly values relations with Russia

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Chinese premier arrived in Moscow on Monday after wrapping up a visit in Belarus.

In Minsk, the Belarusian capital, Premier Wen held talks with President Alexander Lukashenko. The two countries issued a joint communique, pledging to further efforts to promote bilateral ties and cooperation.

Russia is the Chinese Premier's last stop of his four-nation tour.

In his written address upon arriving at the airport, Wen Jiabao said Sino-Russian ties are developing fast and the Chinese government highly values its relations with Russia. He says he expects this visit to be productive.

On Tuesday, Premier Wen is scheduled to meet his Russian counterpart Viktor Zubkov.

He will give a speech at a China-Russia high-level economic forum and participate in an official closing ceremony of the "Year of China" in Russia.

Before his trip to Moscow, the Chinese Premier visited Belarus, where he held talks with Belarussian President, Alexander Lukashenko.

Both sides have agreed to maintain regular contacts and exchanges at various levels, including those at the top level.

They've also agreed to further open the market and to encourage the expansion of mutual investment.

Another consensus is to ensure the implementation of key cooperation projects in such areas as telecommunications and electric power.

China is scheduled to hold "China Sci-tech Day" in Belarus next year, and Belarus may hold similar activities in China.

Both sides also encouraged each other's provinces and states to set up mutual partnerships.

China and Belarus will encourage more exchange students and a Confucius Institute Program at Belarus State University will be be launched.

In addition, both sides have promised closer cooperation in international and regional affairs.

Following their meeting, Premier Wen and Lukashenko attended a signing ceremony of economic and cultural cooperation documents, and the two countries issued a joint communique.

Premier Wen's tour has also taken him to Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
