The Iraq status report presented to Congress by U.S. president George W. Bush will determine the next chapter of the war. It comes amid deep skepticism from the Democrats and the public and an increasingly shaky Congressional Republican support for the White House's Iraq strategy.

Bush's Iraq report is based on recommendations from the top U.S. general in Iraq and the U.S. ambassador to Iraq.

On Monday, in a long-awaited testimony, General David Petraeus said the troop build-up over recent months had met its military objectives.

General David Petraeus of US commander in Iraq, said, “In recent months, in the face of tough enemies in the brutal summer heat in Iraq without jeopardizing the security gains we have fought so hard to achieve.”

The testimony comes amid deep skepticism as Congress debates when and how U.S. troops should leave Iraq.

It also comes amidst election campaigning. Iraq has been a focal point of the November 2008 presidential elections, with Democrats generally favoring more and faster troop withdrawals.
