Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas have agreed to set up a team to work towards achieving a two state solution to the conflict between the two sides. Olmert has also made an offer to release Palestinian prisoners ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The three-hour meeting between Olmert and Abbas is the latest in a series of talks aimed at reaching a declaration of principles ahead of an international conference on Middle East peace, expected in November.

In a potential sign of progress, Olmert and Abbas agreed to establish teams to discuss ways of advancing the peace process. A joint ministerial committee will be established to facilitate these efforts to address the thorniest issues including the status of Jerusalem, final borders and the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

Israeli government spokeswoman, Miri Eisin said, "They both stated they want to contribute to the success of the upcoming international meeting. The two leaders also emphasized the importance of their joint commitment to a two state solution, and they have decided to appoint teams in order to work toward achieving this goal."
