Protesters in Taiwan wearing red T-shirts held a candlelight vigil in Taipei Sunday evening to show opposition to the island's leader Chen Shui-bian.

Shih Ming-teh, former chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party, joined the protest, saying it opened a new page for the anti-corruption campaign in Taiwan.

Shih Ming-teh said, "I know your discontent and anger. I totally understand. Let me tell you, your efforts and contributions in the past year did not go in vain."

Thousands of protesters blocked a central Taipei street and lit thirty-thousand candles to demand Chen step down over suspected corruption. The rally is scheduled to last for three days. Hundreds of thousands of Taiwan people gathered on the same day last year after members of Chen Shui-bian's family were implicated in a series of scandals.
