Chinse Premier Wen Jiabao has wrapped up his four day visit to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Wen met with locals to discuss the challenges the region is facing.
Premier Wen asked local people about the difficulties they face in their daily lives. The Premier said that solving their problems is one of his priorities. He assured them the government will help build earthquake-resistant houses and implement measures to control floods.
Premier Wen also stressed his concern for the education of ethnic minority children. At a local kindergarten, Wen listened to one little girl, who addressed him in fluent putonghua -- the official language.
Wen emphasized the importance of learning putonghua for Uygur children. He said it will enable them to advance in today's world -- and more bilingual teachers should be recruited.
Energy is an important issue in Xinjiang. Visiting the hydro project in Karamay, Wen encouraged the efficient use of water resources -- as well as oil reserves. Wen Jiabao showed particular interest in solar energy equipment.
Wen praised the development of environmentally-friendly energy in Xinjiang.
He pledged the Central Government's full support for Xinjiang's future. And he encouraged local authorities to strive for the well-being of the population.
