Nearly 250 dead after torrential rain lashes down on India, Pakistan

Torrential rain has lashed down on southern India, killing at least 45 people and leaving many without homes.

Neighboring Pakistan has also been affected by the storms. In the city of Karachi, over 200 people were killed in less than 24 hours.

Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh state, where 21 people have died.

Parts of Nandyal town in the district, were submerged in water of up to 120 centimeters.

Many hillside homes collapsed as land fell away creating mud-slides.

More than 20,000 people in the rain-ravaged areas have been moved to relief camps.

In Mumbai, capital of Mahasrashtra state, suburban trains were delayed due to flooded tracks, with many low-lying areas of the city knee-deep in water.

In neighbouring Pakistan, over 200 people were killed in the city of Karachi.

Strong winds and rain caused widespread damage, bringing disruption to communication and traffic systems for some 15-million people.

Local authorities say most of the deaths were due to their homes collapsing.

Many others were electrocuted as the storm brought down broken power lines. Several areas were in blackout on Sunday and works on restoring the electricity supply has already started.

Weather forecasters say the rain, which began Friday, is expected to continue across the two countries for the next few days.
