Special Report:   Cultural Heritage Day

The Forbidden City in the heart of Beijing was the home of 24 Ming and Qing dynasty emperors. But time, nature and the rigors of the modern urban environment are all taking their toll on its walls. But it is NOT being neglected, a dedicated team are battling around the clock to restore it to its original glory.

Forbidden City is now undergoing the biggest renovation in its 600 year history. And the center of the palace -- the Supreme Hall, or widely known as the emperor's throne room is having its first redecoration in 300 years. It's also the biggest challenge for the project team leader, Li Yongge.

Li Yongge, renovation expert of The Palace Museum, said, "The purpose of the renovation is to keep fit of the buildings. We hope there won't be any big problems for those main architectures in another 300 years."

The aim is to keep it as close to its original appearance as possible. And modern architects still have much to learn from their predecessors.
