China shares close above 4,000 points, turnover hits new high

China's key stock index has ended at a fresh closing high, breaking the 4000 benchmark and with a record turnover.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index sailed past the psychologically important mark of 4,000 at 10:49 in Wednesday morning trading.

That marks a gain of 49 percent so far this year on top of a 130 percent rally in 2006. After some struggles around the level, the index finally managed to close the day at 4013.09 points.

Turnover rose to 255.33 billion yuan, a new record from 205.19 in the previous session.
