Cities in southern China's Guangdong province have been undergoing a facelift recently. It's part of a long running renovation project focusing on older buildings and with the aim of retaining the authentic flavor of the region. Something which could set a good example for many other cities across the country.

In the residential areas in Guangzhou, the provincial capital, the renovation involves giving the streets and buildings a facelift, updating the facilities, and planting more trees and vegetation.

Local residents are delighted to see the end of shabby exteriors, shared lavatories, and garbage strewn streets. Great care is being taken not to damage any of the cities historic sites and to retain the look of previous structures to preserve the character of neighborhoods.

The "University City" is another good example. There new state-of-the-art buildings stand in harmony with the old residential area. The renovation kept to the original look and layout of the area.

A university student said, Keeping the renovated old style buildings helps us to understand local history and culture better.

The city facelift project has been carried out in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan, the three major cities of Guangdong province.
