Shanghai is testing a wireless control system for Metro Line 8. It's expected to improve safety and reduce the time between trains.

Subway officials say the new line will be the country's first to use the Communication-Based Train Control system.

The system gives accurate, wireless and automatic signal transmissions between trains. It displays their location and status. It also allows the interval between trains in rush hour to be reduced from three minutes to one-and-a-half.

The first phase of Shanghai's Metro Line 8 runs along the city's northeast to the World Expo site in Pudong. It's scheduled to open by the end of this year.
