UN to discuss possible Iran sanctions on Wednesday

South African Ambassador Dumisani Kumalo, the council's president for this month, says the five permanent members will produce a draft, whether or not they reach full agreement.
The modest package of new sanctions against Iran is likely to include an embargo on Iranian arms exports and an asset freeze on more individuals and companies linked to Tehran's nuclear and missile programmes.
It's also likely to include a ban on government loans to Iran. But a travel ban is likely to be dropped.
On Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister, Manoucher Mottaki, confirmed that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is applying for a US visa, so that he can appear in person before the UN Security Council to clarify the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear activities.
