Asian Winter Games: China tops leader board with 3 golds

The ongoing Asian Winter Games in Changchun China tops the medal count so far with three golds, two silvers and five bronze medals. Japan is in second place with three golds, two silvers and one bronze. And South Korea follows in third place with one gold medal. Kazakhstan is in fourth with one bronze.

China's Wang Fei has raced to victory in the women's 3,000 meter speedskating competition. Her time also breaks the previous Asian record.

This, in the battle for the first gold of the Games. Newly-crowned, Asian all-round champion, Wang Fei, was among the last to compete. But she clocked four minutes and 13.08 seconds to win the title.

Wang Fei, 1st gold medalist in the Games, said, "I was relaxed as I competed in front of the home spectators. It is just my day today."

The 24-year-old has also qualified for the World Championships in the Netherlands.

Japan took second and third in the competition.

Later, China also won gold in the women's biathlon 7.5 kilometer sprint event.

Thirty-year-old Liu Xianying missed just two shots in a strong wind before clocking the title and winning the first gold medal in snow sports of the Games.

China's Kong Yingchao took second and Dong Xue grabbed third.

China's Sui Baoku was the dark horse in the men's 1,500 meter short track speed skating event. But he sprinted ahead at the end to win the gold medal.

The short track speed skating final was a contest between China and South Korea. But a team effort helped China's Sui Baoku surge ahead in the last lap. The 21-year-old's last minute charge surprised his rivals. And Sui Baoku clocked two minutes, 20.59 seconds to grab the gold by a slim margin. South Korean Ahn Hyun-Soo took the silver. And Chinese skater Li Ye won the bronze.

Sui Baoku, gold medallist 1,500 meter short track speed event, said, "My two teammates helped enormously. In the first laps they skated ahead to eat away at most of our rivals' stamina. That allowed me to trail behind and save my energy."

And in the women's event, Jung Eun-Ju of South Korea won the gold. And Chinese skater Wang Meng took the bronze.
