UN urges Asian countries to be on alert for new outbreaks of bird flu

WHO Chief, Dr. Margaret Chan, warned that the influenza viruses were notoriously sloppy, unstable and capricious, and it was impossible to predict their behavior.

But she said the H-5-N-1 strain of bird flu is still essentially a disease of birds, as the virus does not, at present, transmit easily from birds to humans.
