Ships have set sail to carry out repairs on submarine cables damaged by earthquakes off Taiwan. And as the repairs may take some time, Internet congestion and limited telecom services will continue.

Telecommunication disruption caused by Tuesday's earthquake south of Taiwan has severely affected businesses in some parts of Asia.

Repair work is continuing and some telecom services have been restored, but more efforts are needed to regain normal service.

In South Korea, 52 of the 117 damaged fixed-lines for business use have been restored. Telecom companies have also secured new routes via land and satellite to re-establish communication between Seoul and Sydney.

In Taiwan some businesses are still finding it difficult to cope with the disruption when trying to communicate with their clients.

The Office of Telecommunications Authority in Hong Kong, confirmed that 6 out of the 7 major optical fibre cables connecting Japan, South Korea and North America are damaged and will take at least five days to repair.

Thailand's Internet regulator and sole controller of the international gateway, CAT Telecom, said four of its eight optical networks have been affected by the Taiwan quake, causing its speed to drop by 70 percent.

In the wake of the crisis, many financial service companies said they will start the new year by improving their contingency plans.
