In India, Chinese President Hu Jintao has delivered a five-point proposal for the development of Sino-Indian relations during his state visit to India. He also met with L.K. Advani, the head of India's main opposition party, and several leftist party leaders.

President Hu delivered the proposal in a keynote address dubbed "Working Together to Expand Cooperation and Create a Bright Future" in New Delhi. He said the two countries should enhance political trust, deepen economic and trade cooperation, and expand cultural communication. They should also solve their border issues, and promote multilateral cooperation to protect the interests of developing countries.

Hu Jintao said China attaches great importance to its relationship with India. "Strengthening Sino-Indian ties is an on-going task, which relies on the efforts of generation after generation. Let's work together to promote a China-India strategic partnership and contribute to a more prosperous and harmonious world." Hu said.

During his meeting with Advani, President Hu said former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had a successful visit to China in 2003, when India's B-J-P led the government. China appreciated his contributions to their bilateral relations.

Hu Jintao said the CPC places great importance on its friendship with the B-J-P, now the main opposition party and an important political force in India. He hoped the CPC and the B-J-P would enhance their exchanges and work together for better relations.

For his part, Advani said the B-J-P admired China's commitment to the development of Sino-Indian relations and believed that bilateral ties would improve.
