Hamas, Fatah discuss coalition

cctv.com 02-23-2006 09:19

Hamas leaders have met members of the Fatah Movement as they continue efforts to form the next Palestinian government.

Hamas lawmaker Mahmoud Zahar says Fatah has indicated they are willing to participate in the Legislative Council. No agreements were reached during the meeting in Gaza City, but the two sides say they will continue to talk. Since the new Hamas-dominated parliament was sworn in on Saturday, party leaders have been looking for partners to join a broad-based coalition, in part to soften international opposition. Also in Gaza City on Wednesday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with the UN Envoy to the Middle East, Alvaro de Soto. The two discussed recent developments in the region, including the Palestinian elections and Israel's reaction to the Hamas victory.
