President Hu Jintao has signed a joint statement declaring the two countries strategic partners. The document was signed after talks between the two presidents. The two leaders promised an improved trade and investment environment and the exchange information on natural disasters.

They agreed to speed up a pilot study on a natural gas pipeline linking the two countries, and start construction of a border cooperation center as soon as possible. The two leaders also mentioned cooperation in international organizations. They pledged to work closely within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in the fight against terrorism, separatism and extremism.

They also proposed developing countries play a more important role in the United Nations, and demanded all resolutions on the UN reform have a broad-based consensus through democratic consultations.
