Russian media interview Hu Jintao

President Hu Jintao has spoken with Russian media ahead of his visit to the country which begins today in Beijing. In interviews with the Itar-Tass News Agency and Channel One TV, the President answered questions on the Sino-Russian strategic partnership, bilateral economic and trade cooperation, key international issues and the development of China's reform and opening up.

Chinese President Hu Jintao told Russian media that his visit is aimed at promoting cooperation, expanding regional and personnel exchanges as well as cooperation between the two countries.

Hu said: "First, we hope to deepen political mutual trust, enhance strategic coordination, push forward the establishment of a fair and reasonable international political and economic new order, and maintain world peace and stability. Second, we want to strengthen practical cooperation in trade, energy, science and technology and the military, giving new contents to the two countries' strategic partnership. Third, promote human and non-governmental exchanges, and enhance ties between local regions in the two countries."

The president also elaborated on economic and trade cooperation. Hu Jintao said China and Russia aim to increase the annual bilateral trade volume to 80 billion US dollars by 2010.

He proposed that the two sides continue to improve trade patterns, and encourage the trade of high tech products such as mechanical and electronic goods. He said that China and Russia should fully and quickly implement the existing energy agreements and further deepen cooperation in the field.

He also proposed the promotion of mutual investment, especially in infrastructure, the tapping of resources and manufacturing. Hu added the two sides should increase economic cooperation and trade between the two countries' border regions. He added that China wants Russia to play an active role in China's western development and the revitalization of the northeastern industrial bases.

The Chinese President also briefed Russian media on the cultural activities of Russia Year 2006 in China and China Year 2007 in Russia. He said the activities will be of great importance for the two countries to deepen traditional friendship and increase mutually beneficial cooperation.
