Immediately following his meeting with Lien's delegation in Beijing, Xie Kunzong, the director of the Beijing Association of Enterprises with Taiwan Investment, told reporters the visit was bringing members hope for the future.

Xie said, "We're happy to learn that Lien Chan and his party are going to draw up policies that correspond to our needs. The most significant achievement of the visit, according to my opinion, is that the road to the future is clearer. We'll be looking forward to the fulfillment of their promises."

Lien Chan's visit has become the hottest topic for almost all Taiwan business people on the mainland over the past few days. They believe the trip will definitely improve the situation across the Taiwan Straits.

Frank Lin, Deputy Director, Beijing Assoc. of Enterprises with Taiwan Investment, said, "We're happy to learn that Chairman Lien Chan has proposed the idea of establishing a common market between the mainland and Taiwan. Nowadays, business links across the Straits are getting closer and closer. Free trade is necessary for win-win situations."

Zhu Jiehui, President, Alliance Telecom, Taiwan, said, "We're so eager for direct flights across the Straits. And I think Lien's visit will help quicken the process to realize this."

Ying Chia Jung, General Manager, Your Best Marble & Granite Company, said, "The visit provides a very good opportunity for greater business cooperation between the mainland and Taiwan. That will lead to a better integration of the mainland's natural resources and the management experience that exists in Taiwan."

But while they see Lien's trip as positive, some business people have expressed concern about Taiwan's internal conflict.

Nelson Y.S. Chuang, President, Beijing Wellset Industrial Equipment Co. Ltd., said, "I wonder if the visit will lead to a new round of arguing among political parties in Taiwan. We really don't want to see that happen, as it's a waste of time and resources."
