Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao residents on Hu & Lien Meeting

And the meeting between Hu Jintao and Lien Chan also had a strong impact elsewhere in China, including in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. The high profile handshake left many people hoping better days are ahead for relations across the straits.

Taiwan media worker Jaw Shao-Kang said: "The handshake of the two leaders was very significant. It marks the beginning of exchanges between the Kuomintang and Communist Party of China."

A Hong Kong resident said: "It was a historic meeting. We Chinese can solve our own problems. I think it will contribute to peace in Asia and the world. Our Chinese nation will remember this moment."

A Macao resident said: "We have seen the return of Macao and Hong Kong under the "One Country, Two Systems" policy. I hope Taiwan can also be reunited with the motherland. All Chinese want to see the reunification of our country.
