Anti-Secession Law rally condemned

Taiwan compatriots have condemned a demonstration masterminded by the island province's Democratic Progressive Party and other secessionist forces. The rally on Saturday afternoon in Taipei comes in the wake of the Anti-Secession Law, passed earlier this month by the National People's Congress. Many Taiwan compatriots, including opposition party members, have criticized the protest saying it sabotages cross-strait relations. Some have called the march a political stunt and a waste of taxpayers' money. The Taiwan authorities have been urged to stop such activities. Meanwhile, the island's non-governmental organizations have also voiced opposition to the event in major local newspapers. They say the passing of the Anti-Secession Law was forced by the actions of the Taiwan authorities. They also warned that Cross-straits relations would be dragged backward if the authorities reverted to its secessionist cause.

And for an overseas Chinese view of the Taipei rally, the China Reunification League in Washington has held a forum supporting the Anti-Secession Law. All participants, including some American friends, say the Law hits the nail of "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces on the head, and aims to realize peaceful reunification.

Huang Qqizhi, President, China Reunification League, Washington, said, "The Anti-Secession Law has already played a key role in containing 'Taiwan independence' secessionist forces. Saturday afternoon's rally in Taiwan illustrates nothing but the obscurantist policy of the Taiwan authorities. It's a law of a new era."
