CCTV Launches Music Channel

China Central Television (CCTV) will launch a new channel -- CCTV's Music Channel, on March 29, making it the 15th channel on CCTV.

The new channel will provide a platform for classical music as well as folk music from around the globe. It is also a channel through which viewers of all ages and all over the world will be able to better understand Chinese music.

Daily broadcast is scheduled to begin at 5:27 am, with an airtime of 18 hours and 10 minutes.

A concert special marking the launch of CCTV's Music Channel will be broadcast on March 28, on CCTV-1 and CCTV-3.

Other CCTV Channels are as follows:

CCTV-1: CCTV's comprehensive channel. Official broadcast began on September 2, 1958. It is CCTV's oldest channel, with the widest coverage and the most influence. 94.4% of the households can receive CCTV-1.

CCTV-2: CCTV's Economic and Financial Information. A channel with 18 time slots, focusing on economic and financial information. It began operation on January 1, 1986.

CCTV-3: CCTV's Arts and Entertainment Channel. A channel designated for arts, fashion, style and music. It began in March 1989. In addition to regular programming, it also broadcasts major performing arts specials and contest events

CCTV-4: CCTV's International Channel (in Chinese). 24-hour satellite channel aimed at Chinese speaking viewers worldwide. It was launched on October 1, 1992.

CCTV-5: CCTV's Sports Channel. The oldest sports channel in China, which began broadcasting on January 1, 1995.

CCTV-6: CCTV's Movie Channel. China's oldest movie channel, transmitting compressed and scrambled signals, via satellite. Daily programming run for 19 hours, that shows 9 feature films, scientific and instructional films and documentaries. It went on the air on January 1, 1996.

CCTV-7: CCTV's Public Information Channel. It is a channel with emphasis on children, military affairs, and agriculture. It began operation on November 30, 1995, transmitting 17 hours a day.

CCTV-8: CCTV's Drama Channel. China's only national, drama channel. It went into service on May 3, 1999.

CCTV-9: CCTV International (in English). It was launched on September 25, 2000, serving the need of English speaking viewers around the world. It is a comprehensive channel, broadcasting 24 hours a day.

CCTV-10: CCTV's Science and Education Channel. A channel with stress on science, education and cultural heritage. It was launched on July 9, 2001.

CCTV-11: CCTV's Traditional Operas Channel. A channel that showcases 200 types of local and traditional operas that appeals to a cross section of the public.

CCTV-12: CCTV's Regional Channel. A channel in step with the government's economic plan to develop vast areas of the western provinces, where economic and social growth need to be greatly accelerated, not to mention time differences in some provinces. It went on the air on May 12, 2002.

CCTV-News: CCTV's News Channel. One of the best news sources in the country today, with news on the hour, every hour, 24 hours a day. It went on the air on May 1, 2003 on a trial basis. It was officially launched on July 1, 2003.

CCTV Children: CCTV's Children's Channel. A channel dedicated to the well being of children, aged 18 and under. Cartoons, games, plays -- all designed for children. It went into operation on December 28, 2003.
