President Hu Jintao has called for a more scientific and innovative attitude to development. The Chinese president made the remarks to a national work conference on population, resources and environment Wednesday.

Hu Jintao called on officials at all levels to put people first, and work hard to resolve the problems that concern people the most. Hu also stressed the importance of achieving balanced and sustainable economic and social development throughout the entire country.

Premier Wen Jiabao also gave a speech at the meeting. He said Chinese people should enhance their awareness of sustainable development, and give priority to conserving, rather than exploiting, resources. He also said resources should be used only for their most profitable purposes.
