At the ongoing sessions of the CPPCC, how to revitalize the old industrial bases in Northeast China has been a major topic of discussion.

Once a model example of a planned economy, these provinces now reflect the difficulties in adapting to the market economy. Economists suggest the monopoly of the state sector should be broken up by encouraging private businesses. Also, a fair market system is needed for all competitors and the government should not interfere with the management of enterprises. Meanwhile, the issue of laid-off workers has been under the spotlight at the sessions. Despite the obstacles, CPPCC members from the Northeast pledged to work hard towards implementing the strategy outlined in Premier Wen Jiabao's government work report.
