Top leaders join group discussions 03-06-2004 08:58

Deputies to the second session of the tenth National People's Congress have spoken highly of Premier Wen Jiabao's government report.

Many said it fully represents the down-to-earth work style of the government during the past year, and that almost all the important issues touching people's lives were mentioned in it.

During the group discussions, deputies noted that the new concepts of government in the past year have brought concrete changes to people's daily lives. They believe that the success in fighting SARS, the launch of China's first manned spacecraft Shenzhou-5 and rapid economic growth are testimony to the growing strength of a nation.

President Hu Jintao joined the Tibet delegation in their discussion. Hu Jintao first expressed his total support and approval of Premier Wen Jiabao's government report. He then pledged that the central government would continue its efforts to further develop the western regions. The president encouraged people in the region to seize opportunities and enhance their own competitiveness, to get better results from the preferential policies given to them.

Hu Jintao also stressed the importance of focusing on economic construction, adding that economic development is the foundation of all other social development. But he maintained that while developing the economy, attention had to be paid to resources, the environment, and achieving sustainable development.

Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the top legislature, said to deputies from Anhui Province that during the past year, the Chinese economy has maintained steady and rapid growth, despite the impact of the SARS epidemic.

But he also pointed out that China is at a pivotal stage of reform and development, and will face some inevitable social and economic conflicts ahead. He said a new approach to development was required to promote coordinated social and economic growth.

Premier Wen Jiabao came to the discussion hall of the Gansu delegation. The premier stressed the construction of a "government for the people". He said the government will hear the opinions of more people in making decisions, and come under stricter supervision by the people. Premier Wen also vowed to improve government efficiency, pay more attention to criticism and ensure discipline for public servants.
