HK, Macao newspapers attack Taiwan referendum

cctv.com 01-18-2004 09:13

A number of newspapers in the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macao have mounted a strong attack on the referendum proposed by Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian. The editorial in Hong Kong's Takongpao newspaper says Chen Shui-bian's referendum is designed to advance the island's separation from China.

It says the Taiwan authorities are trying to gain the voters' sympathy and support by irritating the mainland. The editorial maintains Chen is realizing his dream of independence by sacrificing the Taiwan people's peace.

Macao's San Wa Ou journal says whatever the theme of the referendum, it is a provocative act against the One China principle and peace in the Taiwan Straits. The paper says it doubts the so-called urgency of the referendum because it will be conducted on the same date as presidential elections and is obviously being used to rally voters.

HK Takongpao: The referendum proposed by the Taiwan authorities is designed to gain voters' sympathy and support by irritating the mainland.

Chen Shui-bien is realizing his dream of independence by sacrificing Taiwan's peace.

Macao Journal San Wa Ou:

The referendum is a provocative act against the One-China principle and peace in the Taiwan Straits.

The referendum is not urgent itself, but urgent for the Presidential election.
