The Philippines has reported two new suspected SARS cases in its northern province of Laguna.

Health authorities said on Monday that a Filipino woman and her husband were found to have developed SARS symptoms of fever, cough and difficulty in breathing. The couple have been hospitalised for further checks.

Doctors say the woman first exhibited SARS symptoms after arriving from Hong Kong. The husband, believed to have been infected through close contact, is in a stable condition.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization says the confirmed SARS case in China and the suspected SARS cases in the Philippines does not mean the epidemic is breaking out afresh worldwide. The WHO representative in China, Henk Bekedam, urged scientific institutions to join forces to track down the cause of the disease and make concerted efforts to eliminate the threat to human life.
