The first SARS victim in Taiwan since the last outbreak is now out of danger and is convalescing.

Mr. Zhan caught the SARS virus through improper handling at a research lab. He has been segregated and treated at a designated hospital in Taipei city over the past week or so. Now doctors say the SARS-virus affected areas of Mr. Zhan's lungs are clearing.

Blood sample tests also show that the virus count in the patient's blood has been greatly reduced, and the patient has had no fever or diarrhea for five consecutive days.

All of the 32 people who had had close contact with the patient, except the patient's father and wife, have returned to normal life in the community.
