More than 1,000 people have marched through the streets in the southern Iraq city of Basra, calling for the death penalty for Saddam Hussein.
Carrying pictures of Ayatollah Muhammed Sadeq al-Sadr, who was assassinated by Saddam in 1999, the demonstrators called for revenge. They also carried pictures of Shiite cleric Muhammed Baqer al-Hakim, who was killed in a car bomb attack last August with 83 others.
Shiites, who comprise the largest community in Iraq, were systematically oppressed by Saddam's Sunni elite. Basra is a predominantly Shiite area.
