China speeds up SARS vaccine approval

The State Food and Drug Administration of China said on Thursday that it has opened a fast track on SARS vaccine approving system to facilitate their entry into clinical operation. The preferential measures aim to maintain the country's leading role in the field of SARS vaccine research.

Officials from the Administration say approving procedures started immediately after the vaccine was submitted last weekend.

Medical experts wasted no time going through the approving process. But the officials also pledged to apply stringent criteria before the vaccine enters the clinical stage.

They said that it would still take quite some time to be assured of the vaccine's effectiveness and safety.
