Chinese President meets Thai PM

Chinese President Hu Jintao has met Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, offering a five-point proposal to boost Sino-Thai relations. Hu Jintao is on a state visit to Thailand to attend the APEC economic leaders' meeting scheduled for October 20th and 21st.

During Saturday's meeting with Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in Bangkok, President Hu Jintao told Thaksin that the new generation of Chinese leadership attaches great importance to its relations with Thailand, and hopes to boost them to higher levels.

To this end, the Chinese President offered a five-point proposal. The points include increasing exchanges of high-level visits and views on important issues, expanding economic and trade cooperation and promoting cooperation in the fields of culture, education and security. The other points involve intensifying exchanges between legislatures, parties and non-governmental organizations as well as strengthening cooperation in international and regional affairs.

President Hu Jintao stressed that China backs a cooperation and dialogue mechanism among Asian nations proposed by Thailand. China also supports an anti-drug mechanism among China, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and India.

Thaksin said he agreed with Hu's five-point proposal, saying it showcases the level of cooperation between the two sides. He added it would help boost bilateral cooperation in new areas. Thaksin also said Thailand would continue firmly adhering to the one-China policy and develop cooperative ties with China in the areas of politics, finance and trade.

Following the meeting, Hu and Thaksin attended the signing ceremony of five documents on bilateral cooperation, including an agreement on establishing a joint committee on trade, investment and economic cooperation.
