Wen Jiabao inspects CCTV

Premier Wen Jiabao has paid tribute to China's television workers for their contribution to the nation's social development.

The premier was speaking during his inspection of CCTV's headquarters in Beijing on Tuesday afternoon. He held discussions with the network's officials, as well as reporters and presenters. Premier Wen threw his weight behind CCTV in its effort to serve the people with quality programs.

He said Chinese television could do more to reflect the changes China has experienced after more than two decades of the reform and opening-up policy. More focus on the lives of ordinary people was also desirable, he said. Premier Wen highlighted the media's role in helping government bodies improve their standard of work. He encouraged journalists to uncover what he called "unhealthy phenomena" in society and government.
