The CCTV Cup English Speaking Contest is a nationwide English-speaking contest. In June of 2002, CCTV and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) drafted an agreement on co-sponsoring the contest, which kicked off the organizing procedure.

The participants come from universities across the entire country. The preliminary contests were organized by the foreign languages departments of every university, and provincial Foreign Language Teaching and Research Committees, which are also responsible for liaison work, organized the quarterfinals.

In September, the CCTV Cup held its first organizing conference. Sheng Yilai, director of the Overseas Service Center of CCTV, Li Pengyi, president of the FLTRP, Yang Zhizhong, president of the College English Teaching and Research Association of China, and heads of the College English Teaching and Research Committees from about thirty provinces were present.

In the following two months, the preliminary contests were held. Interest was high and the Contest Secretariat received many inquiries for consultation and registration.

By the end of November, the quarterfinals had concluded and each province had selected its top three contestants for the next round of competition in Beijing. At the beginning of December, all semifinalists gathered in the capital and go all out for the final glory.
