The yearly competition for the Spring Festival gala's general director was held a few weeks ago. The general director, a great concern of many viewers, has been named after meticulous investigation and consideration. Jin Yue, a director from the CCTV Art and Entertainment Center, has been selected to take the job, much to his satisfaction.

The CCTV Spring Festival Gala, with a history of 200 years, began to adopt the mechanism of choosing the general director through competition in 1994. The measure has assured high standards of the gala ever since, making it a famous program.

According to the head of CCTV's Art and Entertainment Center, 9 groups made up of 19 people in total, both veterans and new young workers from the center's departments of Multi-function, Art and Entertainment, and Music, took part in this year's competition. In the preparatory phase, each group gathered ideas and suggestions from all kinds of talents and submitted outstanding designs.

The organizers were happy to discover fresh ideas and bold new designs in the competition.

Amid extensive speculation, TV Weekly conducted an interview with the new director, the first one he agreed to accept after he was named the general director. A graduate from Beijing Broadcasting Institute, Jin worked with previous Spring Festival galas in 1994, 1995 and 2001. He has won 16 awards including China TV Arts "Starlight Prize" and the title of Best Director of the same prize.

Jin said competing for the position was actually not an individual effort but a collective undertaking. It is also a process of a rational reflection on the event. Talking about next year's gala, he expressed that he would take in other groups' best ideas because "the gala is a crystallization of all the previous and present workers' collective wisdom."

The 2003 Gala should be hot and joyous, calling for unity and further progress. As for the performances, Jin said they would focus on overall coherence, popularity of new songs, and novelty of cross-talks and skits.

Currently, a team made up of well-known personnel from art and literature fields is working hard on the design, which should be completed by the end of September.
