Expedition from South to North

TUE DEC 11 12:56

On Dec. 5, a group of top Chinese cameramen set off for the Antarctic, to start an unprecedented eight-month journey across Antarctica, to South America, North America and, then, back to Asia.

Organized by the Science and Education Channel of CCTV (CCTV-10), this expedition from the south pole to the north pole, covering four continents and more than thirty countries and regions, is considered a great assignment for Chinese journalists.

Starting on January 7, 2002, TV viewers can catch up with their stories each weeknight at 8:30 p.m. on CCTV-10. The group will send back videotapes via satellite, while in the studio experts will discuss related issues. There will be about 130 episodes in total.

Unlike a travel program, this series will give the audience a strong taste of the local life. And in addition to a scientific research, this activity will focus more on different societies and cultures in different places around the world. Each country is unique with its distinctive cultures and different problems. The program looked at these issues from a historical perspective, but no answer will be given.

¡°Basically, we will only present a process of exploring these societies, and raise the questions with no ready answers,¡± said a senior program producer, who believes openness is the essence of TV as a public medium. Although experts may elaborate on these cultural or social issues, their opinions are not necessarily conclusions. Viewers can make conclusions based on their own judgment.

The program will also look at the lives of citizens of Chinese origin on these continents, their struggle and their contribution to the local economy.

With the growth of China¡¯s economy, CCTV has enjoyed rapid progress and increasing influence in the world stage. The pole-to-pole expedition is another major feat to show its strength as a top national TV station in China, as well as a gift to the 1.5 billion viewers in the Asia-Pacific region.
