Snake in the Lake

TUE NOV 06 17:15

Dice Snakes neither have venomous fangs nor do they bite, not even in defense of their lives. In May on the side of Lake Lugano, the dice snakes are beginning to feel the Spring. There's action in the blackberry bush and in the heap of wood by the lake: male seeks female.

They have to keep coming up to the surface for air but to hunt they have to move. They use very little oxygen and stay even for several hours underwater without breathing. A dice snake feeds almost exclusively on fish, but it needs up to 50 attempts for one successful catch. When they finally are successful, like all snakes, they swallow their prey in one piece. Small fishes are eaten on the spot, whereas bigger ones are taken ashore.
